Parent Information Evening – Concussion, September 2016
Ms Lucy Clarke, Head of Medical at Hong Kong Rugby, gave parents and educators a practical overview of the latest research on concussion.
This well attended evening gave insight in the guidelines for immediate and ongoing care of concussion based on established protocols and gave clear timelines and tests on returning to play.
This parent information evening was brought to us by our sponsors Parsons White Wealth Management, a Partner Practice of St. James’s Place Wealth Management.
Easter Eggstravaganza – bigger than ever!
An incredible amount of chocolate Easter eggs and other Easter goodies were donated to the PTA this year and we managed to create a new record of 44 baskets for the annual Easter Eggstravaganza. Many of our students bought tickets and the delight on the winners faces at the assembly on 31st March was obvious. What a treat to start off the holidays! A huge thank you to the DCPTA parents for organising this wonderful Easter tradition once again and to all the parents, staff and students who donated eggs and other chocolate treats, created the Easter baskets, and sold and bought tickets. We know the winners will enjoy their goodies.
Parent Information Evening on Cyber Bullying
Last night, more than 60 parents and teachers attended the free information evening organised by the DCPTA on cyber bullying. Mui, Tina and Rog Thomas spoke of their personal experience with cyber bullying and how it can affect a child’s life. DC’s own Digital Literacies Co-ordinator, Mr Joe Leithhead highlighted the current DC policies and gave useful tips to parents on how to keep track of their children’s activities online.

Discovery Culture Festival, December 2016
This year’s Discovery Culture Festival was a fantastic celebration of art, culture and literature. From the colourful character parade to the student music performances and exciting electives, the experienced all that was on offer. African Drumming & Stories, Dragon Dancing, Stage Fighting, parkour, cake decorating, photography courses, book quizes and art exhibitions were all part of this year’s week long festival.
A huge thank you to Leah Ahmed and Peter Lasscock for organising this year’s event. Also, a thank you to all other Discovery College staff and parents who organise and run the festival and to the families and individuals who are our Patrons.

Kelly Yang held a talk on the opening speech of the Discovery Culture Festival. A journalist, educator, and author, Kelly Yang held a talk on the topic of how to get published as a student.
This motivational session shared Kelly’s unique journey as an author and offered tips for students and their parents to create and publish their own original works.
Kelly published her first book at the young age of 12 and, entering college at 13, is a graduate of the University of California, Berkeley and Harvard Law School. She is a columnist for the South China Morning Post and the best-selling author of children’s books. She has been published in the New York Times, The Washington Post, The Atlantic, CNN and other newspapers and magazines around the world.
Kelly spoke about about key techniques for writing success, “easy” ways to publish, traditional publishing, success cases of children who got book deals and tips for pitching to editors and publishers.
Family Fun Day, December 2016
The Family Fun Day this past Saturday was everything we have come to expect of this biggest DCPTA fundraiser of the year and more. Wonderful games, delicious food and a great variety of commercial and charity stalls all resulted in a perfect day for so many of our DC families and visitors from the whole community.
Highlights of the day included:
- Delicious international food stalls from Canada, China, Germany, India, the Mediterranean, Japan, Korea, the Philippines, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Thailand, the United Kingdom, the United States of America, as well as a Plant-based stall and the Discovery College Cake Stall
- Face painting, nail painting and coloured hairspray in the Granite Courtyard on the LG/F
- Bands, choir and musical entertainment by DC students
- Performances including dance, kids aerobics, judo, karate, yoga, Capoeira and Zumba
- Bubble Soccer, Laser-tag from Epicland and the Texas Shoot-Out Nerf Gun Challenge games including Scavenger Hunt, Climbing Wall and many more
- Discovery College teacher-run bar

Halloween Costumes Sale, October 2016
The DCPTA HALLOWEEN SALE once again offered wonderful range of costumes for children, babies, and adults.
Thank you to the donators of the costumes and party goods, and to the tireless ladies who organised, sorted and sold them for this year’s Halloween Sale. The DCPTA raised a massive amount selling our Halloween goodies and all proceeds will be used to support our donations to the school.
2016 Discovery Dragon Boat Races and Carnival
What an amazing day it was at the 2016 Discovery Dragon Boat Races and Carnival!! Supported by their fans and, once again, the best pit stop on the beach, our own DC Cobras brought home more bling. We could not be more proud. Well done to both teams, trained and motivated by their dedicated coach Neil Robbins.

DCPTA Guest Speaker Programme – Angie Tourani, IMI
The HK Welsh Male Voice Choir in concert with Unsung Heroes and the DC Cobra Choir
The wonderful sound of the Hong Kong Welsh Male Voice Choir was joined by our Primary Cobra Choir and DB’s Unsung Heroes in a sell-out performance in May 2016. This was a delightful Sunday afternoon and an entertaining introduction to choral music for children of all ages.
Oh what a night – Comedy Night 2016
What an amazing night out! The comedians of the Hong Kong TakeOut Comedy Club had a sold-out crowd in stitches this past Saturday at our Annual Comedy Night. Anthony Solimini, Earl Young, Ryan Hynek and Jami Gong, founder of the Hong Kong TakeOut Comedy Club, made us laugh till we cried with their hilarious performance. A big thank you to Sapna Harris and her team of parent volunteers for organising this hysterically entertaining evening and for providing the refreshments before, during and after the show!
DCPTA Easter Eggstravaganza
Once again DC’s generous families donated a wonderful range of chocolate Easter eggs and other Easter goodies and the PTA was able to create 30 tasty Easter Baskets for the annual Easter Eggstravaganza. Many students bought tickets and it was lovely to see the excitement on the faces of the raffle winners at school assembly on 24 March 2016! Thank you to the DCPTA parents for organising the raffle and to all the parents, staff and students who donated Easter treats, sold raffle tickets, bought the tickets and created the delicious Easter baskets. We hope the winners enjoy their Easter goodies! An amazing $9,000 was raised and proceeds will support the DCPTA’s funding of new event tents for our school.
Fabulous Discovery Culture Festival
This year’s Discovery Culture Festival was a true celebration of art, culture and literature. From the colourful opening festival parade to the student music performances and exciting electives, all students were able to explore and experience all that was on offer. African Drumming & Stories, Dragon Dancing, Stage Fighting, parkour, cake decorating, customs design, book quizzes and art exhibitions were all part of this year’s week long festival.
This year’s photography competition, as part of the festival, was opened up to all year groups with wonderful entries received from students of all ages. Andrew the Brilliant Balloon Man
We were treated to two amazing sold-out shows on Saturday 5 December when ‘Andrew the Brilliant Balloon Man’ came to DC. Andrew, the funniest balloon man in the world, had all children and adults laughing and cheering in their seats with his fabulous balloon sculptures and his entertaining show. A magical day indeed for the whole family. The event was part of the Discovery Culture Festival and the proceeds helped to support this event.
What a fabulous Family Fun Day!
Wonderful games, activities and arts & crafts, delicious food stalls, delectable commercial & charity stalls and perfect weather all made this year’s Family Fun Day absolutely fabulous. It was great to see so many DC families and visitors from the whole community there to enjoy the gorgeous afternoon.
THANK YOU to all the parents, teachers, students and support staff who volunteered – Family Fun Day would not be the huge success it is without all of your help. And thank you DC parent Jane Robbins for so ably heading the Family Fun Day organising team. It was our busiest, biggest and best ever!
Highlights of the day included:
- Music performances by DC’s talented students and entertaining displays by DB-based groups including dance, capoeira, judo, karate, kids aerobics and zumba.
- DC parents – you outdid yourselves with the delicious selection of international food stalls and enticing cake stall donations. Thank you also to the parents and teachers who ran the drinks station.
- Arts, Grafts and Activities kept the little ones and teens entertained, including the student-run face painting, coloured hairspray, Human Foosball, Lasertag, Nerfgun Challenge, and the messy play area. DCPTA Halloween Sale 2015
The DCPTA Halloween Sale returned again this year. Thanks to DC parents Sue and Gary Panons, who kindly donated a wonderful range of fancy dress costumes for adults, children and toddlers. All proceeds from the sale went to the DCPTA to support our school.
DB Dragon Boat Races & Carnival 2015
Discovery College again entered two teams – a mixed adult team and a youth team for ages 14-18 – in the annual DB Dragon Boat Races & Carnival on Saturday 20 June 2015. Our students won the 2nd Runners Up Trophy again this year. Thank you to Team DC coach and organiser (and DC Dad) Neil Robbins for his excellent training and organising of the teams. The HK Welsh Male Voice Choir in concert with the DC Cobra Choir
What a wonderful concert! The DC Primary Cobra Choir sang beautifully with the HK Welsh Male Voice Choir to a sell-out theatre on Sunday 26 April 2015.
The concert featured musical styles from Welsh hymns to classical pieces and contemporary pop, including ”You Raise Me Up’ and ‘Rhythm of Life’. DB’s Domestic Helpers’ Choir ‘Unsung Heroes’ also took the stage and wowed the audience with their beautiful ‘I wish I could kiss you goodnight’.
Founded in 1978 by a group of Welsh expatriates, the HKWMVC has grown to a choir of more than 50 members encompassing at least a dozen nationalities. They have performed around the world, including at the Sydney Opera House, London’s Royal Albert Hall and the Hong Kong Rugby Sevens. It was a delight to have them perform at DC again.
Concert proceeds support the College’s annual Arts & Culture Festival.
The DCPTA Annual Easter Egg Raffle 2015
Thank you to all the parents, staff and students who donated Easter treats, sold raffle tickets, bought tickets and created the delicious Easter baskets for the annual DCPTA Easter Egg Raffle. DC’s generous families donated lots of treats and PTA volunteers created wonderful baskets brimming with Easter chocolates. Many students bought tickets and it was lovely to see the excitement on the faces of the winners at school assembly the day before Easter term holiday. We hope the winners enjoyed their Easter goodies! Proceeds supported the PTA’s fundraising for a shade cloth next to the new Foreshore pitches.
‘Comedy Night’ laughs
What a hilarious night! DC Stand Up Comedy Night, Saturday 14 March, 8pm, in the Black Box Theatre, was a huge success – with the comedians entertaining a full house. Thank you to the comedians – including Anthony Solimini, Garron Chiu, Tamby Chan and Hugh Somerset – who had the audience in stitches. And thank you to the DC parent volunteers who organised and ran the night. Proceeds supported the College’s annual Arts & Culture Festival.
Discovery Arts & Culture Festival, December 2014
The College’s 7th Arts & Culture Festival, December 2014, was a wonderful week that saw students challenged, inspired and entertained by visiting local and international artists and educators. The DCPTA is proud to provide funding and support for this event. Highlights included:
- The colourful carnival parade.
- Primary experiences included African djembe, Brazilian Capoeira, Chinese watercolour painting, dragon dancing and parents shared stories, art and music from their cultures.
- Secondary workshops included drumming and percussion with Japanese drumming maestro Kumi Masanaga, stage fighting with Faust International Youth Theatre and graffiti art with French artist Miguel Souchon.
- Y6s and Y11s created stunning installation art with the festival’s artist-in-residence from Australia, Nicole Voevodin-Cash.
- Senior students enjoyed engaging electives, including creative writing with Nury Vitachi, cartoon story telling with Fred Boot, a tour of Disney’s dubbing studios, costume design, ceramics, singing masterclass, DJing, photography and exploring Indian culture.
- Diploma students impressed with their ‘Work in Progress’ visual arts exhibition and Film Night. Senior drama students wowed with their production of Vinegar Tom.
- The festival closed with a wonderful night of music by our talented students at Ensemble Evening.

Family Fun Day 2014 – on Saturday 15 November – was the biggest and best yet. It was great to see so many DC families and visitors from the whole community there to enjoy the wonderful afternoon. THANK YOU to all the parents, teachers, students and support staff who volunteered – Family Fun Day would not be the huge success it is without all of your help.
- Wonderful music and performances by DC students, choir and DB-based groups
- DC parents – you outdid yourselves with your delicious international food stalls and enticing cake stall donations. Parents and staff ran a busy bar and the students ran the popular popcorn machine
- So many activities kept tiny totts to teens entertained, including bouncy castles, messy play area, trash or treasure game, ‘bubble soccer’, HIT Room spin cycle challenge and student-run face & nail painting, coloured hairspray, sponge the teacher, DC challenge and soccer shootout
- Fun arts & crafts activities organised by Primary parents
- Many attendees enjoyed the wonderful variety of commercial and charity stalls, student-run Mendoza backpack stall, second-hand book stall, and professional mini photo shoots by Highjump Photography

The DCPTA Halloween costume and party items sale 2014
Congratulations Sue Panons, Sue McMaster and all the parent volunteers who ran the Halloween costume and party supplies sale at DC in October 2014. It was lovely to see so many happy parents with costumes for their children, and themselves, at fantastic prices. Wonderful fund raising for the DCPTA and our school.
The PTA began the 2014-15 school year hosting a coffee morning for new parents on the first day of school. A great opportunity for new and existing parents and members of the school leadership team to meet and chat informally, ask questions and make new friends. In September we hosted a coffee morning for new teachers and enjoyed welcoming new members of staff to the College.
Congratulations DC Dragon Boat Teams 2014
The DCPTA was proud to support the DC teams competing in the 2014 DB Dragon Boat Races on Sunday 1 June. DC fielded a Mixed Adult team – made up of DC parents, staff and senior students – and a Youth Team of students aged 14-17. Both teams trained hard, did well and were all fantastic, fun competitors. Congratulations goes to our students on winning 2nd Runner Up in the DB Dragon Boat Races first-ever Youth Team competition. Thank you to Team DC coach and organiser (and DC Dad) Neil Robbins for his excellent training and organising of the teams. And thank you to the organisations who kindly sponsored Team DC – Baymac, Mendoza Bags & Luggage, Oldham, Li & Nie, Relosmart Asia, Uncle Russ and My Pet Shop. Thanks also to the students, parents, staff and sponsors who came down to help at the DC ‘Pit Stop’ and support our teams on race day.

Planning and Financing for Your Children’s Higher Education, May 2014
Presented by DB resident Gordon Franks from Lifestyle Brokers, one of the DCPTA’s 2013-14 Annual Sponsors, this was an information evening designed to answer a range of questions from parents on the important topic of how to plan for and finance our children’s higher education.
Diet, Lifestyle Choices and How They Affect Our Children’s Health, June 2014
Dietician Denise Fair presented information for parents and students on diet, food and lifestyle choices, and how the choices our children make today affect their health now and in the future. Look out for more interesting, informative and educational talks in 2014-15…
DC Primary Cobra Choir performs with the HK Welsh Male Voice Choir
The DCPTA, along with the DC Music Department, organised a fun family concert on Sunday 11 May 2014, that also gave the DC Cobra Choir the opportunity to perform with the HK Welsh Male Voice Choir. The choristers performed to a full theatre and there are already requests do this again next year.

Discovery Arts Fest, February 2014
The DCPTA is proud to provide funding and support for the College’s annual ‘Discovery Arts Fest’. What a wonderful week the February 2014 event was! From February 23 to March 3 Discovery College was buzzing with artistic activity, as the whole school celebrated Arts Fest. There were workshops, master classes, shows, exhibitions and other activities for students throughout the school. From stage craft to street dance, performance to parkour, architecture to app building, film making to photography, singing to sculpture, cake decorating to costume design… students enjoyed an enriching week coached by artists and educators from around HK and internationally. A number of events were open to the entire DB community, and most shows sold out.
Family Fun Day 2013
DC Family Fun Day is the result of a huge collaborative effort by DC parents, staff and students. The annual fair, held every November, is a highlight community event and school fundraiser. The 2013 fair included a wonderful mix of games, activities, arts & crafts for children of all ages, an outdoor stage with music by our talented DC students, ‘sponge the teacher’, spin bike teacher/student challenge, kids messy play area, face painting, a ‘Trash and Treasure’ game, bouncy castles, popcorn machine and more! No one went hungry with the amazing selection of international food stalls from our parent community, cake stall, drinks station and Uncle Russ coffee. Christmas shopping started early for many at the wonderful variety of commercial and charity stalls.
The 2013-14 Sunday Concert Series
For the past four years, the DCPTA has held a series of concerts each school year designed to share wonderful music with DC families and the wider community. This school year saw six fabulous concerts –ranging from the acclaimed Romer Quartet, to the Low Strung cello group, to drumming and percussion wizard Chris Brien.
On Saturday 5 October 2013 the DC Dance Studio was transformed into an India-inspired set for ‘Bollywood Night’. The evening was a sell-out and included delicious Indian cuisine and all the colour and fun of Bollywood-style music, dancing and entertainment. Island Dance provided entertainment and instruction on the night for all those keen to learn to dance Bollywood style. A fun night for DC parents, teachers and the wider DB community!
