MYP Yr 3 | Technology (resistant)| Course Overview

In this course students will follow a design cycle model to investigate a range of contexts and generate and develop solutions using a range of different materials, which will include resistant materials, compliant materials and food.  Students will engage with tasks of increasing complexity.  They will be expected to work in an increasingly independent manner on more open-ended tasks and will identify needs or opportunities for design activity from broad concepts and rely less on teacher-directed tasks.

Current Unit
Unit timing:
8 weeks
AOI focus:
Human ingenuity
Unit question:
‘How can I design to meet real needs?’
Summative assessment:
Investigate (collecting data, analysing existing products and writing a design specification) Design (sketching and evaluating solutions) Plan (making final drawings, creating a workplan) Create (using a range of hand and machine tools, possibly to include the use of CAD/CAM) Evaluate (writing an evaluation of the product and the design process)
MYP assessment criteria:
A (Investigate), B (Design), C (Plan), D (Create), E (Evaluate), F (Attitudes in Technology)

Unit 1: STAPLE FOODS (8 weeks)
Unit Question: How Can we look after ourselves and others?
Area of Interaction: Health and Social Education
Concept: Staples are the lifelines for many countries.
Students will investigate the Staple Foods of the world.
Students will conduct research on the various types of breads from around the world. Function of ingredients- yeast, salt, flour and liquid. Practical work will include preparing basic bread dough. Design work will involve students improving/modifying the basic bread dough to make a new product for a specific target group.
MYP Assessment Criteria: A-Investigate, B-Design, D-Create, E-Evaluate.
Summative assessment: Market research/Questionnaire, Product Analysis, Design Ideas, Product outcome, Written evaluation.
