MYP Yr 3 | Mandarin B (Standard) | Course Overview
In this course students further develop their reading, listening, writing and speaking skills in Mandarin with the aim of attaining functional fluency in the language. Activities used to build student knowledge and understanding include writing with increasing sophistication for different purposes, learning to read and listening to more complex Mandarin texts for general and specific meanings, as well as learning to draw conclusions. Students will also develop their listening and speaking skills through role-plays, delivering monologues and participating in unscripted conversations. Note that there are 4 classes within the Standard course, with placement being determined by the student’s proficiency in the language.
Standard 1 (Ms Li) Unit title: My family and myself AOI focus: Health and social education Unit Question: How does language reflect cultural attitudes? Standard 2 (Ms Lee) Unit timing: 4 weeks AOI focus: Environment Unit Question: How can I help others appreciate and care for the environment? Summative assessment: Writing (short paragraphs) & Speaking (Monologue). Standard 3 (Mr Gan) Unit title: My school campus AOI Focus: Community and service Unit Question: What makes a great school? Indicative timing: 4 weeks Summative Assessment: MYP Assessment Criteria: A (Oral communication – message and interaction), B (Oral communication - language) , C (Writing - message and organisation), and D (Writing - language) Speaking - students will prepare and present a verbal presentation on their school. As well as a descriptive component of the physical features of the school, students will also be expected to discuss the school's strengths and recommend areas for improvement. Writing - students will prepare a written description of the school, including photos, maps and other illustrations, to be used by prospective students of the school. MYP Yr 3 | Mandarin B (Advanced) | Course Overview
In this course students will develop their reading, writing and speaking and listening skills in Mandarin with the aim of recognising fine details and drawing inferences and conclusions, understanding and responding appropriately to complex narrative and factual texts, and using various kinds of complex language structures to support points of view. Activities used to build students’ knowledge and understanding include writing for different purposes, developing reading and listening strategies, and further developing an understanding of the influence of culture on how Mandarin is used. Students will also develop their speaking skills through discussions, role-plays, retelling stories and debate.
Unit Title: Current affair & entertainment Unit Question: What is the impact of media? In this unit, students are examining different types commonly encountered media and what their broader impacts are. They will also learn how to categorise newspaper and magazine articles and investigate the impact of media in their own lives. Date of entry: 03 February, 2010
MYP Yr 3 | Mandarin A | Course Overview
In this course, the Class is designed for those students who have a strong background in the language either as native speakers or considerable formal schooling with Mandarin as the medium of instruction. In this course students will be exposed to the literary traditions of Chinese-speaking communities and will be expected to demonstrate a capacity to write creatively and critically, respond effectively to literature, coherently structure and support their work, and use language effectively to support their work.
